The Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER) is working diligently to expand hydrogen research and development in an effort to reach the Korean government’s goals of 5.26 MMt/year of hydrogen at a cost of 3000 won/kg of hydrogen by 2040. Globally, there has been a surge of investments in new hydrogen technologies. The Biden Administration has set the goal of $1 for 1 kg in 1 decade for clean hydrogen. Several pathways exist to reach this target including reducing electricity costs, reducing capital costs, and reducing operating and maintenance costs. Making, moving, storing, and using are all vital for the success of hydrogen, yet production tends to be what policy makers focus on. The viability of hydrogen will connect many different industries and use different technologies.
