Small modular reactors (SMRs) represent the next generation of nuclear energy innovation and are 300 MW or less. Imagining SMRs as a way to generate electricity is a narrow focus; SMRs contribute a paradigm shift in heavy industry, desalination, and food production all of which are greenhouse gas intensive with current technologies. Currently, the global nuclear market and new nuclear builds are largely dominated by state owned enterprises of Russia and China. The market opportunities that SMRs offer for the United States and its allies suggest that SMR exports can be a key strategy in competing with state owned enterprises in global nuclear exports. The United States and its allies must be on the forefront of SMR deployment to ensure the 21st century is a century of freedom.
