This one-hour session marked the 70th anniversary of the U.S.–Republic of Korea nuclear partnership by reflecting on
how decades of cooperation in research, technology development, and reactor deployment have evolved into one of the
world’s most advanced civil nuclear alliances. The discussion highlighted the historical foundations of the partnership,
including early scientific collaboration and the institutional frameworks that enabled Korea’s emergence as a leading
nuclear energy nation, while underscoring the enduring strategic value of U.S.–ROK cooperation in promoting energy
security, safety, and nonproliferation.
The session explored how the alliance is adapting to a rapidly changing global energy landscape.
Speakers discussed opportunities for deeper collaboration in advanced reactor deployment, supply-chain resilience, fuel
cycle innovation, and workforce development, as well as the growing importance of nuclear power in meeting rising
electricity demand driven by digital infrastructure and industrial growth. The conversation emphasized how sustained
coordination between U.S. and Korean institutions, industry, and research organizations can help shape the next era of
allied nuclear leadership.
