Perspectives on an Energy Transition in the Republic of Korea
In cooperation with the Republic of Korea Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy (MOTIE) and the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning (KETEP), GABI hosted a private roundtable with ROK officials and representatives, energy professionals, and Washington-based experts to discuss issues of importance to energy policymaking in South Korea.
The present Republic of Korea government seeks to increase the share of renewables in its energy mix and minimize its reliance upon coal and nuclear power. In undergoing this shift in energy policy, Korea must consider a broad suite of issues, including national security, global climate change efforts, etc. Approaching these issues with a long-term perspective and taking into full account the international ramifications will be necessary in order to arrive at prudent policies that best serve the interests of the nation and the Korean public.
