Convene a high-level private workshop among preeminent Korean, Japanese, and American experts in nuclear energy and nuclear policy issues, with the intention of fostering relationships, confidence building, and seeking potential areas for trilateral cooperation.
This meeting continues on with the theme of spent fuel and radioactive waste management, which has been an ongoing issue in Korea, Japan, and the U.S. However, instead of solely focusing on the back-end, this meeting seeks to explore greater opportunities for trilateral cooperation from a broader global perspective. Solving thorny issues such as economic competitiveness, waste management, and decommissioning through a mix of both technical and policy tools will be fundamental with respect to the future role of nuclear energy- not only in these countries but worldwide.
This meeting will also include a site visit to the Crystal River Nuclear Power Plant and derive specific lessons from the Crystal River case- its process of spent fuel transfer, management of the shutdown process with operating coal units nearby, considerations for its future transition from SAFSTOR to DECON, etc.
