According to authoritative studies, nuclear power will be indispensable in meeting the challenges of soaring global energy demand and carbon mitigation. Next generation nuclear technologies, such as the Integral Fast Reactor (IFR), address issues traditionally associated with nuclear power: safety, waste, and proliferation. Accelerating the development and deployment of advanced nuclear reactors will require not only active public-private partnerships, but also close international collaboration. Current advanced reactor technology programs in the US seek to reduce the technical, financial, and regulatory risks of next generation nuclear through close engagement with industry and international partners. International cooperation in advanced nuclear energy R&D exists in both multilateral (Gen-IV International Forum) and bilateral arrangements, such as between the US and the Republic of Korea.
