Nuclear energy will be a key energy producing technology in the coming battle against climate change and
greenhouse gas emissions, especially in sectors such as heavy industry and transportation. Advanced
nuclear technologies offer a number of innovative characteristics that allow them to be more economical
than traditional large light water reactors (LWRs). Furthermore, there is a large international market for
exports of advanced nuclear technologies, specifically small modular reactors (SMRs). SMRs and advanced
reactors offer better economics and allow for non-electricity generation capabilities such as desalination
and hydrogen production. Widespread deployment of SMRs will be reliant on international cooperation in
areas such as regulatory harmonization, demonstrations, and more.
