As the U.S. looks to take back global nuclear leadership through the next generation of advanced nuclear
technologies, it is imperative that advanced nuclear and fast neutron testing capabilities are made available
to facilitate R&D and regulatory efforts. These testing capabilities will be needed to develop advanced fuels
and materials that will be required to make advanced nuclear reactor designs a reality. The Versatile Test
Reactor (VTR) is a fast neutron testing facility that was created to address domestic U.S. fast neutron
testing needs. The VTR has undergone significant progress in terms of design and code standardization,
with many of the testing capabilities being developed. Furthermore, the VTR is the first project to apply the
Licensing Modernization Project, which may help further accelerate further licensing efforts for the future
of the industry.
