The continued expansion of nuclear power worldwide, particularly in various countries throughout Asia, has presented new opportunities in the international nuclear market. However, the US nuclear industry presently faces considerable challenges that have the potential to impact its ability to compete in international markets, including but not limited to competition from shale gas, regulatory barriers, and complex export control systems. In such an environment, collaboration with other countries, such as the Republic of Korea, is crucial to enhance export competitiveness in nuclear energy. Both the US and ROK nuclear industries are closely linked, and the two countries are already jointly involved in third country civil nuclear projects. Expanded cooperation between the US and ROK would facilitate nuclear commerce for both partners, and further their mutual interest in strengthening international standards in nuclear safety, security, and nonproliferation.
