Nuclear power issues are inherently international in scope, and thus, it is vital to educate and train the next-generation of civil nuclear professionals and leaders with an international perspective. Numerous educational programs are aimed not only at addressing the technical issues of sustainability, safety, security, and safeguards, but also the social, economic, environmental, and geopolitical aspects of these subjects. One such program is the World Nuclear University (WNU), which was founded in 2003 shortly after the OECD/NEA had determined that the ageing nuclear workforce would soon become a major issue for upcoming generations. WNU courses address world energy, climate change, international regimes in safety and safeguards, nuclear power economics, fuel cycle issues, and a host of other issues. Employing multinational faculty and encouraging the participation of students throughout the world, such programs help develop international networks among civil nuclear professionals and foster global thinking with respect to nuclear power issues.
