Cooperation in financing of nuclear reactor projects between the United States and South Korea will be integral to the joint efforts in exporting nuclear technologies. There are a number of global developments that have suggested that there is a renewed opportunity for nuclear in the global market including the Russia-Ukraine war, South Korea’ recent presidential election results, and the global movement towards climate change and ESG focus. There are a number of financing cooperation models that can be drawn on from history, and there are various options for the US and Korea to cooperate, especially building upon the already existing cooperation that occurred during the Barakah One project. While there are some key challenges for the nuclear financing community to overcome, significant progress can be made with the current cooperative solutions that have been suggested.
