The Energy Systems Integrations Facility (ESIF) is a national User Facility operated by NREL to accelerate the
development of integrated energy systems in order to support the transforming grid. ESIF is equipped with
a number of different attributes and testing capabilities. One of ESIF’s key attributes is the Hardware-in-
the-Loop (HIL) testing capability that allows experiments to be connected to virtual simulations in order to
collect real-time data that cannot be collected in the field. Furthermore, NREL works with various domestic
and international partners, both public and private, to help bridge the gap between early stage research
and market readiness. The ESIF is currently partnered with a number of companies to demonstrate
innovative energy integration technologies.
