GABI had the privilege of participating in the 2nd Kijang Forum for Sustainable Development of Nuclear Power Plant Cities, held on June 8 – June 10, 2015 at the Paradise Hotel in Busan, Republic of Korea. The forum discussed community-level perspectives on a variety of issues—local economic development, emergency preparedness, spent fuel management, and impacts of plant decommissioning.

GABI Director of Programs and Communications, Alan Ahn, was invited to give a presentation on nuclear power in the U.S. and current developments in decommissioning and spent fuel management. In particular, he discussed how the present trajectory of the U.S. civil nuclear program could impact the pace of decommissioning projects, consequently magnifying the urgency of defining and implementing a clear back-end strategy.
